Dear Cathedral Family,
Summertime often returns my memory and imagination to summers of my younger life, when the world seemed filled with possibilities opening onto an endless horizon. Although the present world differs greatly from the world of my youth, I can recapture that sensation by witnessing the energetic and ambitious plans of young people. I even find my own sense of purpose and possibility is inspired by theirs.
Summertime here at the Cathedral is a time for those of us who are older to be awed and inspired by the young people around us. This Sunday we welcome Carsten Kennedy as our guest preacher. A rising senior at St. Luke’s Episcopal School and a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Carsten was a part of the Official Youth Presence at the 81st General Convention of the Episcopal Church. He will be sharing with us his experience of the wider church at General Convention and his hopes and dreams for the Church and the world.
We also continue to be amazed and delighted by the musical talents of the Betty Coale Young Musician Scholars each Sunday. Elizabeth Bemis-Gatter has done a beautiful job of reaching out and finding incredibly talented young musicians from our area, and we are all enriched by their gifts. Please do make a point of spending some time with them after worship on Sundays and introducing yourself to their parents.
As we begin looking forward to the beginning of the next school year, Deacon Pratt Paterson is leading our annual Operation Backpack in new directions, reaching out to students in schools throughout the Mobile area. Look for more information in the notes here and on our website.
Although the events of our world are often troubling, this world is also filled with great beauty and countless sources of delight. I hope that your summer presents you with moments of wonder that inspire you to participate in the healing of the world.
Faithfully, Beverly+
