Dear Cathedral Family,
This Sunday is the Fourth Sunday in Lent, Laetare Sunday. Laetare is the imperative that appears at the introit of the Roman mass for this day, “Rejoice, O Jerusalem,” calling us all to REJOICE.
We rejoice because we have passed the half-way point of Lent and Easter is in sight. We rejoice because God’s great love for us has been revealed in Jesus. We rejoice because through his passion, death, and resurrection, he has reconciled us to God and to each other. We rejoice because HOPE lives in us.
This Sunday’s gospel reading is the parable of the prodigal son, which might more aptly be called the parable of the loving father. The father’s rejoicing and celebration at the return of his son is the strong image we carry with us from this familiar story. And we cherish it because we know that this is how God loves each one of us and longs for us to come home to Him.
As we enter the final weeks of Lent and preparation for the journey through Holy Week, I hope that you will join in this Sunday of refreshment and renewal. You will be welcomed home with rejoicing!
Faithfully,
Beverly+
