Prepare the Way

Writer: Dean GibsonDean Gibson

Dear Cathedral Family,

On this Second Sunday in Advent, we will experience an abbreviated “Lessons and Carols” in the Liturgy of the Word of our worship. But fear not: we will still be reading the Old Testament and Gospel designated by the lectionary for this Sunday! John the Baptist will begin his ministry, and we will heed the prophets in their calls to prepare the way for the One who is coming.

Music plays an especially important role in this season of preparation. Sunday’s worship will be filled with musical delights, and we will welcome our good friend harpist Rebecca Atkinson as guest musician. Rehearsals continue for next week’s performances of “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” so remember to add either the Friday evening or Sunday afternoon performance to your calendar. This Sunday will also be the final rehearsal for our annual Children’s Christmas Pageant, which will take place next Sunday, December 15 at 9:30 a.m.

If you have not yet signed up for the Angel Tree Project this year, you may do so through this Sunday, December 8; gifts should be returned by the next Sunday, December 15.

Above and beyond all the activities of preparation, Advent is essentially a time of making our hearts ready for Christ’s coming among us—not only in our annual celebrations of his birth, but in his coming again to bring justice and peace to all creation. My prayer for you all is that you will find moments each day in which to reflect on the words of Scripture and to experience God’s presence in your lives.

Faithfully,

Beverly+
