July is Happening

Dear Cathedral Family,

We’re back from the July 4 holiday break and fully into planning for the remainder of the summer and the upcoming 2024-25 program year. In this week’s notes you will find information about Christian formation, music program offerings, and opportunities for loving service to our community led by our new vocational deacon, Pratt Paterson.

Newly ordained to the vocational diaconate, in his full-time employment Deacon Pratt remains the executive director of Wilmer Hall and joins us here at the Cathedral for Sunday worship and up to 10 hours per week of outward-facing service ministry to our community. He is currently planning new ways for us to engage in our mission to the wider community this fall, and he will be sharing more about his diaconal ministry when he preaches on July 28.

On Sunday, July 21, our guest preacher will be Carsten Kennedy. Carsten recently served as a member of the official Youth Presence at the 81st General Convention of The Episcopal Church, and he will be sharing his experiences there as part of his sermon. Carsten is a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Mobile and is a rising senior at St. Luke's Episcopal School.

On Monday, July 29, we will host a screening of the newly released documentary “The Philadelphia Eleven,” about the first ordinations of women to the priesthood in The Episcopal Church on July 29, 1974. This event is free and open to anyone interested. It will take place in the Chapter House at 6 p.m., and the film lasts for approximately an hour and a half.

The next meeting of the book group for the Dean’s Summer Read of N. T. Wright’s “Paul: A Biography” will take place at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31 in the Huger Meeting Room and via Zoom. Look for a streaming link on our website and in an email closer to the meeting time.

I hope that this summer is a time of rest and refreshment for you all as we prepare for the next season of life together in the Cathedral Family.

Faithfully, Beverly+
