Hosanna

Dear Cathedral Family,

Last weekend I had the opportunity to see the sculpture in the picture above at the Birmingham Museum of Art as part of a retrospective of the work of sculptor and Birmingham native John Rhoden (1916-2001). Rhoden often interpreted images of Christian iconography, and in this case “Hosanna” depicts Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a colt as part of his “triumphal entry” just days before his crucifixion.

What fascinates me about this sculpture is the way its stark simplicity conveys the humility, the peaceful centeredness, and the grace of this meek king. There is no sense of conquest or royal accession here, but rather a purity of purpose about what lies ahead. Jesus’ right hand is raised in blessing, and his face is fixed forward.

This is the Jesus we will greet in the garden this Palm Sunday morning. We will follow his progress into Jerusalem, and then we will witness his last time with his disciples, his betrayal, his trial, and his execution. Throughout it all, we will see his humility, his peaceful purpose, and his grace.

In this email you will find information about the ways that you can follow Jesus through the events of the Holy Week ahead. I hope that you will make time to come together to watch and pray in some of our services this week. The joy of Easter will be even greater after you have drawn closer to Jesus during this week.

Faithfully,

Beverly+
