Dear Cathedral Family,
The last few weeks before Lent are always a busy time in the Cathedral Family. Many of you are involved in Mardi Gras activities that add an extra layer of obligations to your lives, and we are all generally caught up in the festivities all around us. Added to the head-spinning news of the world and the ongoing demands of work, school, and family life, this season can take us to new levels of distraction and confusion.
So even now, before the relative quiet of Lent, each of us needs some space in which to anchor our soul. This is why even a few minutes at the opening or closing of each day, spent with a bit of scripture linked with prayer, can be a place to remember who we truly are and what is deeply important in our lives.
And presence in the Body of Christ in worship is perhaps even more important in seasons of busyness. This Sunday’s readings, like all scripture, is particularly suited to help us see our present reality clearly. They contain: stories of love, reconciliation, and care within families; encouragement not to “fret,” as this opens the door to harm; a reminder that life in the kingdom of God is the “imperishable” reality hidden amid the things of this world. Most importantly for this moment in time, we hear the words of Jesus, directing us to love those who do not love us, to be merciful, not to judge or condemn—and above all to forgive.
God’s word is constantly being sown in the field of your life, if you receive it with an open heart, it will sprout and grow and bear fruit.
Faithfully,
Beverly+
