MARRIAGE

Christian marriage is a solemn and public covenant between a man and woman in the presence of God.

In the Episcopal Church it is required that at least one of the parties must be a baptized Christian;

that the ceremony be attested by at least two witnesses;

and that the marriage conforms to the laws of the State and the Canons of the Church.”

–Book of Common Prayer

MARRIAGE

We are happy to explore with you your interest in having your marriage celebrated here at Christ Church Cathedral. The parish will do whatever we can to make your wedding day a blessed one. Your desire to be married at Christ Church Cathedral means to us that you are committed to being active members of this particular community of faith.  If your home after your marriage is to be in another community, your willingness to become a member of a church in that community is essential.

Weddings at Christ Church Cathedral are conducted according to the marriage liturgy found in the Book of Common Prayer.  Our wedding coordinator will share with you other practices and guidelines concerning weddings at Christ Church Cathedral, and answer any questions you may have (including the availability of the church on the date you have in mind).

We should begin with a word about our understanding of marriage. We believe that marriage is a lifelong spiritual commitment. We cannot say it better than the Book of Common Prayer:

“Marriage is intended by God for their mutual joy, for the help and comfort given one another in prosperity and adversity and, when it is God’s will, for the procreation of children and their nurture in the knowledge and love of the Lord.”  Book of Common Prayer, page 423

One of the most challenging and rewarding of human relationships, marriage is meant to be lived out in a community of faith where it can be supported and nurtured by others seeking to grow in love, forgiveness, justice, and compassion.  By choosing to be married at Christ Church Cathedral, we invite you to be supported by and committed to this church community now and in the future.  For those who have no intention of regular involvement in any Church, it might well be more appropriate to be married in a different context.
